According to New Mexico State Police, deputies initially encountered the man earlier that evening during a domestic violence call in Capitan. Deputies said the man fled when they arrived, resulting in a pursuit. Deputies were able to disable the man's vehicle with a tire deflation device on U.S. 380 near milepost 53. They said the suspect refused to get out of his vehicle and began pointing a gun at his head, telling officers he wanted to kill himself. AState police said the man fired shots from his vehicle at officers, who shot and killed him.
