At approximately 4:16 p.m., police attempted to stop a pickup in Levelland for a traffic violation. The vehicle reportedly refused to stop, and the driver, Leonardo Gallegos Jr., fled. Troopers pursued and attempted to stop the vehicle by deploying spikes. The vehicle was eventually spiked but continued to evade police into a field northwest of Whiteface. The driver reportedly shot at law enforcement, and they shot and killed him.
