Police responded to a possible hostage situation at 8:44 a.m. A man called 911 to report there were hostages inside an apartment and that somebody had been injured by a person with a machete. When police arrived, they knocked on the apartment door, and a woman answered the door and was escorted out of the residence. Officers ordered anybody else in the apartment to come out. They allegedly were confronted by a man with a machete, who failed to comply with orders to drop it. One officer reportedly tried to use a Taser on the man, but when he was not incapacitated, an officer shot and killed him.
