Former combat medic Layton was found unconscious at 4:45 a.m. on New Year's Day in the entryway of a grocery store. Combative and resistive to officers rousing him, he was tasered twice, which stopped his heart. He was revived but lapsed into coma and died five days later. Friends held that he'd been injured in a fight; police refused to be open about details.
