After 6 p.m., deputies got a call about three men in a black BMW approaching people, asking them where they are from and showing a firearm. Deputies found the vehicle in Salazar Park. Three sheriff's vehicles with six personnel total were involved in the stop. Police said the driver of the BMW got out and opened fire at deputies. Rene Herrera was killed, and Fernando Cruz and two deputies were wounded.
