While investigating, police said they encountered a man on Stratford Street who matched the description of a person who may have been involved in the shooting. Police approached 20-year old Chantz Cooper, and a Savannah Police Officer and Cooper fired shots at each other. A bullet from the exchange flew into the home of Cynthia Fields, killing her.
