Officers were on patrol near a motel and were doing a routine walkthrough of the business. As the officers approached one of the rooms, they reported smelling narcotics. The officers went to the room and spoke to a person inside of it, but during their conversation, police said the man tried to run away. The officers followed the man to his car, where he got in and tried to drive off. A fight broke out, and one of the officers shot and killed Sanchez Lowe.
