An eight-member U.S. Marshals task force went to arrest William Watson Jr. around 9:30 a.m. As officers approached the house, Watson, wearing body armor, shot at officers. A 44-year-old officer from the St. Louis County Police Department returned fire and hit the suspect. Eventually a search of the property led to the discovery of Watson's body inside a carport.
