Deputies tried to stop Makarenko because he was driving erratically through neighborhoods in Carmichael, according to police. When he turned onto a street with a dead end, deputies got out of their cars and ordered him to get out of his car. Instead, Makarenko put his car in reverse and accelerated. A deputy shot and killed him.
