A Riverside County Sheriff's Department news release said an officer responded to multiple reports of a man breaking windows on South Poe Street. The officer encountered a man a few blocks away on West Heald Street who matched the description of witnesses and asked him to surrender, according to the release. Police said the suspect had used a piece of wood to break windows and a sliding glass door to a residence, which he attempted to enter and was confronted by the occupants, one of whom was struck by the suspect and sustained injuries. In an effort to subdue the suspect the officer used pepper spray, but the man did not appear to be affected, said police. The man came back at the officer armed with two baseball bats, and he was shot and killed.
