McAfee's mother said that he called her 2.5 weeks before he was killed and said, 'Mom, they're out to kill me,'" referring to law enforcement. McAfee was a member of a gang. Accounts between deputies and witnesses differ between whether McAfee had a gun and pointed it at officers or not when he was confronted. He may have fled into a backyard, and was shot to death.
