McRae carjacked a black Pontiac from a woman in the mid-afternoon. The victim flagged down a local police cruiser and her vehicle was quickly located in front of an apartment block. According to police, McRae exited the vehicle and turned toward police as if brandishing a weapon. Shot, fatally wounded, he collapsed on the steps of the apartment.
