At 3:54 a.m., officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a vehicle. The two officers approached the vehicle to speak with the two occupants. The driver exited the vehicle, while the passenger moved into the driver's seat and allegedly attempted to flee. One of the officers contacted the driver, the other officer tried to stop the fleeing vehicle. The new driver accelerated away while the officer, still inside the vehicle with the driver, continued to order the driver to stop. The vehicle entered the Interstate, into the oncoming traffic lanes. The officer shot and killed the driver and reportedly stopped the vehicle along the side of the Interstate.
