Sixty-one-year-old Diana Crockett Conner, who had lost her husband a year before and her mother three years earlier, called 911 to report prowlers on her property. On the phone with a dispatcher, she said she didn't believe the men who showed up at her house were Putnam County Sheriff's deputies. Neighbors told the Florida Times-Union that Conner was paranoid lately saying odd things and complaining that her phone was bugged. In the early morning hours, police say she barged outside firing a rifle at deputies. Deputy Thomas Burger shot her four times with his pistol, killing her.
