A police officer investigating credit card theft encountered Smith, the suspect pulled a gun and pointed it at the officer. He then fled, hijacking an automobile. An hour later, police cornered Smith near a busy shopping center. Smith now had two guns, and he pointed one at his head and one at his stomach. When he pointed one of the guns at police, five officers open fired, killing him.
