Just after 10:20 a.m., police responded to an armed robbery at Famous Footwear. Officers were told that Joey Nelson had fled in a vehicle and was armed with a handgun and a knife, police said. Officers found Nelson driving the vehicle and attempted to stop the vehicle, but Nelson fled. The vehicle later stopped , and Nelson reportedly left the vehicle armed with a weapon. Officers ordered him to drop the weapon before he allegedly pointed it at them, and he was shot and killed.
