A hospital security guard called police around 4:30 a.m. to report a suspicious vehicle at Smith County Hospital. Two Carthage Police Department officers responded and approached the vehicle. The driver, Joseph Robbins, allegedly tried to hit one of the officers with his vehicle. One of the officers shot and killed Robbins.
