Police responded to a home after receiving a report that a man was holding another person at gunpoint, but residents told the officers no one had called the police, authorities said. As they left, the man appeared in the street and began shooting toward the home, according to the police account. One officer returned fire, killing the man. Investigators currently believe the man was targeting someone inside the house.
