The woman shot had been an intimate partner of the suspect, and she came to the home to flee her boyfriend and seek shelter with her son. The boyfriend found her and broke into the home with an assault-style rifle and multiple magazines. The man shot the woman in the hand and the leg, and fatally shot the toddler. He fired on reponding police, and police shot and killed him.
