Former Minneapolis Police officer Thomas Kiernan Lane already had a criminal record before being charged as an accessory to the murder of George Floyd (see complaint at https://copblaster.com/uploads/files/thomas-lane.pdf). According to public records, Thomas Kiernan Lane was convicted of a misdemeanor in 2002 for violating a Minnesota statute that prohibits people from intentionally damaging the property of another person. He was sentenced to a $50 fine and one year of probation. Lane also has had at least three other minor run-ins with the law over the years for loud partying, speeding, and parking violations.
On top of his criminal past, the Minneapolis Police Department released a heavily redacted copy of his personnel file (see PDF link above this article). In that file he answered "yes" to the nepotism question on his job application and listed the name of a relative that already worked for the city of Minneapolis. We do not know for sure if this person helped Lane overcome his past when becoming an officer.
According to his job history, although he was a rookie as a Minneapolis police officer, he had worked in law enforcement for a long time. He was juvenile correctional officer in 2017 and an assistant probation officer in 2018. Obviously, Officer Lane was someone that should have known that Officer Chauvin was not handling George Floyd correctly. His experience is highly relevant since at his arraignment (see video below) his attorney (Earl Gray) argued that his client had only been on the force for a matter of days.
Lane is also a high school dropout.
